In Memory: Maggie Ryan

It is with great sadness we share that one of our recent Anthropology graduates, Maggie Ryan, was killed in a car accident on Sunday, May 22 while driving to her parents’ home in Boston.

Maggie received her degree in Anthropology with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies this past Friday. Within Anthropology, she followed the Global Heath and Environment track. She was the co-executive director of Dance Marathon, which raised over $119,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis, and was active in Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority.  We extend our sincerest sympathies to Maggie’s family and the many friends who loved her.  We hope that they find comfort in knowing the positive impact she had on our campus. Chryssi Yip, a member of the Class of 2013, was also in the vehicle and survived the accident.

With many of our students away from campus over the summer, we are encouraging them to take advantage of resources in their local areas, including family, friends, clergy, or mental health providers, to assist with the grieving process. If they are located in St. Louis or are unsure where to turn, below is a list of departments and contact numbers that are open this summer that you can refer them to:

  • Office of the Dean of Students, 314-935-8499
  • Student Health Services, 314-935-6666
  • Campus Ministries: wustl.edu/current-students/religious-life/
  • For help during non-business hours, please call the WU Police at 314- 935-5533

We will gather as a University Community to celebrate Maggie’s life in the fall.  Details will follow.
